Growing up, Amy Adams was the middle of seven children from a military family. Her family settled into a modest existence after relocating from Italy to Castle Rock, Colorado, where her mother was a semi-professional bodybuilder and her father performed in local theaters. Her family abandoned the LDS (Mormon) church after her parents split when she was eleven years old.

Adams chose not to attend college after first training as a ballet dancer and participating in school choirs.
